Will The Vikings Pursue a Veteran Quarterback Because of the Lockout?

Are the Minnesota Vikings looking towards different direction at quarterback because of the length of the lockout? Might head coach Leslie Frazier seek out  a veteran leadership in the quarterback position in free agency. The NFL draft took place in late April the Vikings selected rookie Christian Ponder and also have another young player on their roster second-year player Joe Webb.

Time is going fast and before Frazier realizes it he needs to determine who will be starting for the Vikings once the season gets going.

On Friday, Frazier indicated the lockout which began back in march “ created more discusion,” among the staff whether to sign or trade  for a veteran.

During the draft back in April the Vikings drafted Ponder as the 12th overall pick. Webb last season started two games for the Vikings his rookie season. However, because of the lockout neither of the young quarterbacks will have an offseason to work with their coaching staff, therefore a veteran becomes a more feasable option.

This past week the Vikings’ coaching staff appeared at Northport Elementary School in Brooklyn Center to build a playground.

Coach Frazier to reporters “We had an idea back in April which direction we wanted to go,” “Maybe we thought about some things. Now we’re into June, and we’re still discussing what’s the best option for us and our quarterbacks.”
He also indicated “What you don’t want to do is put a guy in harm’s way where his confidence is affected for the future. So we have some different things we’ve got to talk (about) and figure out.”

Young players in the past were groomed in the offseason and taught by the coaching staff to enable them to start, basically taking a quarterback and starting him from ground up. Frazier has reference earlier this year he likes the idea of that having a quarterback work his way into the system. Two present quarterbacks Falcons Matt Ryan and Ravens Joe Flacco were successful through this framework. However, both players had the opportunity to receive full offseasons with their respectable coaching staff in their first years in the NFL.

Fraizer also said “Now we’re at a point where it’s hard to compare their rookie years with Christian’s rookie year,” It’s June the 3rd. We haven’t had any contact with him other than draft day.”

This maybe an indication the Vikings are willing to seek out a veteran and move in a different direction because of the lockout.
If Minnesota is to pursue a veteran quarterback there are many options many of them with great talent to lead the team to the playoffs. Vikings may go after one the high profile quarterbacks like Eagles Kevin Kolb, Washington’s Donovan McNabb, Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer, Tennessee’s Vince Young, Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck or Denver’s Kyle Orton, among other with more experience in the NFL.

What’s in store for the Vikings and their quarterbacks remains in question.  With the assitance from former NFL quarterback Chris Weinke both Vikings quarterbacks have been able to have some offseason coaching and workouts. This past they were able to run through plays with some of their receivers.

Additionally the two quarterbacks have copies of the new offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s playbook.

With this coming together the quarterbacks maybe somewhat ready once the season starts but that still remains to be seen. Not having the actual coaching staff working with the players this offseason its virtually impossible to define what will occur.
